Larry Retires

“(Lance) Mackey is forcing the golden harness-winner into retirement.

‘Even if he wants to do another, I’m not going to let him,’ said the 38-year-old Fairbanks musher. ‘He’s got a lot of miles under him.’

Larry has finished eight Iditarods — seven with Mackey and one with former Mackey neighbor Paul Gebhardt from Kasilof — and four Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Races, not to mention dozens of middle-distance sled dog races.

His record as a leader is remarkable.

Larry has led teams in 10 races of 1,000 miles, and he has won seven of them.

Larry made a big name for himself in 2007 by becoming the dog to win the golden harness in both the Yukon Quest and Iditarod. His master made history that year, too, winning sled-dog racing’s first Iditarod-Quest double. (Each of those races are over 1,000 miles and are just a few weeks apart.)

Before Lance and Larry, it was thought impossible to win both of those ultra-endurance marathons in the space of about a month. Lance and Larry proved that doubly wrong with wins in 2007 and again in 2008, though it obviously wasn’t easy.

When Larry posed for photographs with Mackey beneath the burled arch in Nome in 2007, the dog could barely keep his eyes open. Wearing a flowered necklace, Larry struggled to keep from falling asleep while sitting next to his master.”

Sweet! He still had 15 of his 16 dogs (only had to drop one) and still had Larry in the lead. Amazing. More here.

From what I have read, it appears as though Lance Mackey is going to win the Iditarod for the third year in a row.

I think that is great and I have a ton of respect for him and what he has been through. Read his story here. He is hours ahead of the closest competetion and will likely finish sometime this afternoon Alaska time. You can watch all the action via a webcam set up by the finish line in Nome. Unfortunately my Rapturous Red and Flesh of Christ crayons both melted, staining the couch a horrible shade I’ve christened “Prince of Puce”.

Found another, although I think I like the Jesus/Darwin one better as the rooting for the ‘positions’ that ‘battle’ are so ubiquitously found in chrome plastic on the tails of cars in my neck of the woods. However, a great band name might be found in the upper left of this one. ’Jesus and The Dinosaurs!’ has a ring, don’t it?

Back-to-back Iditarod winner (2007-2008) Lance Mackey has moved into the lead. More here. Sweet.

“I’m standing here on the ice in front of the Iditarod checkpoint. Lance Mackey is in as the current standings will show on the web site. No other team has arrived as of this time. Lance in fact, arrived here at such a quick pace that he caught the volunteers and staff still completing the finishing touches to the checkpoint.

Lance had the incredibly fast time on 12 hours 34 minutes total from Takotna to here. Compare that now to the blazingly fast run Jeff King had of 13 hours 12 minutes in 2007. I can’t do the fact checking from this remote location but it’s possible Lance just broke the course record for fastest time ever from Takotna to Iditarod.”
